The relationship between businessmen and the world of poker has been well documented, and that continued this week at the Aussie Millions, according to a report in local newspaper the Sydney Morning Herald. According to the report, at least two high-profile businessmen were seen rubbing shoulders at the celebrity tournament, which was held as part of the Aussie Millions tournament, being played at Melbourne's Crown Casino and ending January 31. Myer chief executive Bernie Brookes was seen clearing out opponents, while Nicholas Bolton, who sits on the boards of BrisConnections and Multiplex Prime, was also there. The report quoted US hedge fund manager Daniel Shak, who is also in Melbourne for the Aussie Millions, one of the biggest in the world. "The skill you need to succeed in corporate life and the financial world is the same skill set you need to succeed at the poker table," Shak was quoted as saying. "'You'd be surprised just how many Fortune 400 company executives and chief executives I've met playing poker." Brookes proved Shak's point at the celebrity tournament, finishing in the last five despite claiming to have never played poker before or to have been to the poker room at crown. "It was all self-help, from all the late night poker I've watched on Foxtel," he said.
A 23-year old Sydney student has stunned the field at the Aussie Millions Poker Championship to take home the A$2 million first prize (US$1.8 million). Tyron Krost, who was completely unknown heading into the tournament, beat out 745 other competitors to win the Main Event, which was completed at Melbourne's Crown Casino on Saturday night. Krost was very lucky to even be in the tournament. According to local media outlets, he took a year off from poker to focus on his studies at the University of New South Wales and only entered the tournament via satellite after other plans were canceled on one particular night. Danish qualifier Frederik Jensen finished runner-up after his King of Diamonds and 6 of Spades fell to Krost's King of Spades and 9 of Diamonds. Both players would have been buoyed after two pairing their king on the flop, but unfortunately for Jensen the 6 he desperately needed did not turn up on either the turn or the river. The $2 million prize was the largest ever awarded in a tournament in the Southern Hemisphere, and Krost's victory ensured the title remained in Australian hands for a second year running, after it was won by Stewart Scott in 2009.

National Rugby League club the Sydney Roosters are seeking legal advice in a big to ensure they maintain their sponsorship with online poker company Full Tilt. The move came after the National Rugby League said Monday it would not be pursuing an agreement with the same poker site, following advice from the Australian government. The Roosters' deal is with FullTiltPoker.net, which is an educational site on which customers cannot gamble. Local newspapers reported in late March that the NRL was considering a deal with Full Tilt Poker that would allow each of the league's 16 clubs - including the Roosters - share in a A$100,000 intake by advertising the site on their club websites. But the federal government aired its concerns over the possible deal, which could be in breach of the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act, which prohibits unregulated offshore gambling companies from entering the Australian market. This does not necessarily mean the Roosters' relationship with Full Tilt is over; CEO Steve Noyce said Sunday that the government suggested the club consider legal advice before choosing whether to continue its relationship with the website. Several rugby league clubs have sponsorship deals with online bookmakers, but those deals have come under less scrutiny because they are with Australian companies. The Brisbane Broncos signed last year with Sportingbet Australia, while the Gold Coast Titans, West Tigers, Newcastle Knights, Cronulla Sharks and Manly Sea Eagles are other clubs to enjoy sponsorship deals with betting agencies.
Australian cricket legend Shane Warne has been blasted by anti-gambling campaigners for using Twitter to sign people up for online poker site 888. Warne tweeted on Sunday that followers could get AUS$8 free poker money if they signed up to the site of online poker site 888, which he endorses. Fellow Victorian and long-time anti-gambling campaigner, the Rev. Tim Costello, criticized Warne for the tweet, which he said could influence children. "Sporting heroes do carry a responsibility to ensure that kids who idolize them are protected from things that aren't appropriate for their age," Costello said. Perhaps Costello was unaware that the tweet was made on the Warne888 Twitter account, which specifically promotes the 888 poker team, of which the former Australian spin bowler is a captain. The site has more than 49,000 followers, who presumably follow Warney not just for his insights into cricket and other sports, but also for his insights into the world of poker, in which he is known to be a keen participant. Warne has been very busy since retiring from international cricket in 2007. Aside from his two-year agreement with 888 poker and writing on his poker blog, he also does work for his charity - the Shane Warne Foundation - which has raised some A$1 million for seriously ill and underprivileged children.
