The debate over iPhone applications of simulated |poker machine games has hit the headlines in Australia, with one federal senator calling for them to be banned. Independent South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon, who ran for parliament on an anti-gambling platform, said it was "irresponsible to allow these applications in the hands of children." "We already have a big enough gambling problem in this country and there is no doubt this will fuel gambling addiction," Xenophon said, adding that he was not aware the games until now. The slot applications in questions, some with the backing of big gaming companies like Harrah's, can be downloaded free of charge. The applications in question do not involve real money, although Xenophon criticized them for giving a "false impression" that playing poker machines "can be a source of income." With iPhone sales growing worldwide, this is a debate we'll no doubt be hearing a lot more about in the near future.

Online gambling regulation could be on the way in Australia following the release of an official report recommending an end to state monopolies on licenses. The report on land-based and online gambling, released last week by the federal government's Productivity Commission, recommended that "state governments not renew retail wagering licenses when most of them expire between 2012 and 2016. The Commission also estimated in the study that the global turnover on online gambling is around $16.6 billion and that the industry employs around 145,000 people around the world. Meanwhile, the federal government has commissioned a separate study into the impact that online, telephone and digital television gambling have on problem gamblers. Australian online gambling laws are currently unclear, with government-licensed providers Tatts and Tabcorp the only license holders to provide services to Australians. Tatts provides betting services as UniTAB in Queensland, the Northern Territory and South Australia, worth around A$130 million a year, while TABCorp holds licenses for the more lucrative Victorian and New South Wales markets, worth around A$252 million in 2009. Because of the restrictive rules, most Aussies actually use offshore providers, where they will spend an estimated $1 billion in 2010.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has come under fire from various quarters after agreeing to demands to crack down on poker machines. In a deal struck with Tasmanian independent MP Andrew Wilkie, Gillard agreed to take on problem gambling, beginning by telling the states that if they don't fit poker machines with devices that limit losses, the Federal Government will be forced to intervene. But the news has been heavily criticized, with state governments set to miss out on up to $1 billion in revenue, according to some estimates. Tasmanian treasurer Michael Aird was among the first to question the plan, although he said that his government remained committed to gambling reform and to finding a national solution to problem gambling. Aird said he could not put a figure on how much revenue Tasmania stood to lose from such a plan. What is known, however, is that it made approximately $60.5 million from its 3680 gaming revenues in 2009-10, a huge amount for Australia's least populous state. ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope also took aim at the plan, siding with local industry officials who said that Gillard had turned her back on previous agreements. The future of poker machines was a significant issue in the extremely tight Australian federal election, which ended in a stalemate that was broken when four of the five MPs not aligned with either major party chose to side with Gillard's Labor Party.
If the odds are any indication, Collingwood is a strong favorite to end its 20-year premiership drought when it takes on St. Kilda in the AFL Grand Final in Melbourne this Saturday. The Magpies, who finished the home-and-away season on top of the ladder, two games ahead of the third-placed Saints, are clearly the team to beat, no matter which bookmaker you look at. Collingwood is 1.40 at Titanbet, compared to St. Kilda, 2.93, while the odds are similar at all other bookmakers taking bets on the game, including William Hill. But an upset is not out of the question, with Hawthorn's defeat of Geelong in 2008 and Port Adelaide's win over Brisbane in 2004 just two of the bigger boilovers in recent grand final history. And of course a preview of a Collingwood-St. Kilda grand final wouldn't be complete without mention of the Saints' one-point win over the Pies in 1966, still their only premiership victory. The last Saturday in September continues to be a huge day for Australian sports betting, capping off a huge month for bookmakers. In fact, according to recent estimates from business information group IBISWorld, fans were expected to bet around $53 million combined on the Australian Football League and National Rugby League finals series. The AFL and NRL finals series are estimated to be worth around $518 million to the economy this year.
