Connery, Tilly, Top Online Casino Dealer Poll

Sean Connery and Jennifer Tilly have topped a poll as the two voices online casino players would most like to have as a dealer. The survey, conducted by Casino Trading Post, asked online casino players which celebrity voice they would most like to have in their online casino. One hundred people were polled in the survey. Australians Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue and retired cricketer Shane Warne all featured in the poll, a fact that the website's spokesman John Simms attributed to their predominantly Australian audience. "Our audience is predominantly Australian and it just goes to show that Aussies know their gambling," Simms said. "They not only want an online casino dealer voice that sounds good, but also one that's authoritative in the gambling world." "As an ex-Bond, Sean Connery has a huge association to the casino lifestyle, and Jennifer Tilly, whilst being very attractive, is a world-class poker player." The Casino Trading Post was launched in March 2009 and is an online casino portal that uses ‘insider experience' to help Australian online casino players learn more about the industry.

Betfair Calls to Overturn Online Poker Ban

The world's largest Internet betting exchange operator Betfair has called on Australia to reform the gambling industry to allow online poker and casino games. The company made the call as part of a submission to a public consultation process on the future of the Australian gambling industry.Betfair said the Australian government should amend the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act, which prohibited online poker and casino games, a move that Betfair says is unenforceable. It claims Australians spend more than A$300 million per year on foreign-based poker sites, money that could be going to local providers."Poker has undergone a phenomenal rise in popularity in recent years, and as a result, more and more poker and other card game players are turning to the Web," Betfair said in its submission."It is illegal to offer online poker to Australian residents, but that hasn't prevented several large international operators from creating an enormous customer base here - assisted by promotional activities using high profile Australians and cross-selling through 'play for free' sites. It is estimated that more than $300m is bet by Australians annually on online poker - and it's a figure that is rapidly growing."Prime Minister Rudd commission the investigation last year to update a 1999 study on problem gambling in Australia, as well as to coordinate a review of gambling policy at both federal and state level.A public hearing and final report are expected later this year after the Productivity Commission receives all its submissions.

Australia Online Poker Law

The letter of the law, if one would read the Interactive Gambling Act as it is, says online poker sites geared towards Australian citizens is illegal. Simple as that. In reality, the ban is less respected by online poker rooms than it is, say, in the United States. Australian newspapers and websites have painted the current situation, which is as follows: Even though the law, ever since 2001, does not permit online gambling firms based outside Australia to take bets from those "physically present in Australia," it is practiced by some. Gibraltar based Ladbrokes have no restrictions. The law has them facing a hefty fine of up to $1.1 million per day, as they risk losing the rights to apply for a Victorian land betting license in the future, which they reported in January that they are interested in. How come? How come Ladbrokes are not being persecuted and online poker companies do take bets from Australians? Perhaps the answer is in the ongoing review of the legislation by the Productivity Commission, mainly since the courts find it difficult to enforce penalties against overseas companies.

Poker Blacklist Under Review

The Federal Government is considering a review of a secret blacklist of banned Websites that includes online poker sites, according to Australian media. The review would be conducted by a panel or prominent Australians or by a parliamentary committee. The blacklist, maintained by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, is supplied to the makers of Internet filters, but publication of the list is illegal. Website Wikileaks embarrassed the government in March when it published a list of sites it claimed were on the blacklist. Apart from child porn, rape and extreme violence sites, the list included online poker sites and even the Website of a dentist. Communications Minister Stephen Conroy told a Senate hearing in late May that the Government was "considering options for greater transparency and accountability in respect of the blacklist." The blacklist is being used as the basis for trials to test the feasibility of a controversial government plan to block banned Websites at the Internet Service Provider level. The plan has been met with widespread opposition, with many saying that filtering devices will not solve the problem of illegal Websites. Licensed betting outlets fear that their Websites will be wrongly blocked under the plans, a fear heightened by the fact that many major betting Websites, including Betfair, William Hill Casinos, Party Poker and FullTiltPoker, were found to have appeared on the leaked blacklist.

Lleyton Hewitt Odds at Wimbledon

Lleyton Hewitt beat reigning Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal in two sets 6-4, 6-3 in an exhibition game at the Hurlingham Club last week, before the Spaniard announced he was pulling out of the competition. Hewitt, the only Australian competing in Wimbledon this year after fellow Australians withdrew from the competition or lost in qualifying matches, will not have to meet Nadal at any stage in the tournament. Will it make it any easier? Hewitt is only a 50/1 odds favorite to win the title according to the William Hill Sportsbook. This places him seventh, behind: Roger Federer 8/11, Andy Murray 15/8, Novak Djokovic 10/1, Andy Roddick 14/1, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Juan Martin del Potro 18/1. A tough draw - Hewitt will meet American Robby Ginepri in the opening round and possibly meet del Potro, the number 5 seed, in the second round. Hewitt is 1/8 favorite over Ginepri, a 9/2 payoff, to win the first round match. More odds and betting options at the sportsbooks.
