The federal government will push ahead with gambling reforms, even without support from the states, Families Minister Jenny Macklin told a gambling studies conference. Players Limit The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Macklin told delegates the reforms would focus on problem gamblers, including the introduction of a pre-commitment system in which punters purchase a card that allows them to set a limit for themselves. Speaking at Jupiters Hotel and Casino, the minister also said that she doesn't think the new Liberal government in Victoria will make it any more difficult for the Labor federal government to achieve their reforms than would have been the case when their own party was in power in the state. Gambling Reform "I think there is a real understanding in Victoria about the importance of gambling reform," Macklin was quoted as saying by the Herald. "I'm very pleased to see some of the remarks made by Mr (Ted) Baillieu before the election about the importance of dealing with problem gambling and I look forward to working with the new Victorian government to implement these reforms." Victoria traditionally has the highest rate of tax revenue per capita out of all the states, as well as the highest incidence of problem gambling, measuring in recent surveys at almost double the rate per capita as that in New South Wales and Queensland.

Australia heads into the 2011 AFC Asian Cup as a realistic chance of winning, with most bookmakers currently quoting it as second or third favorite for the title, behind Japan and South Korea. The Socceroos have exhibited up-and-down form leading into the tournament that has many observers predicting a repeat of the previous tournament in 2007, when Australia was knocked out at the quarter-final stage. But the relative strength of the list and the experience that comes from competing against the best in the 2006 World Cup sees the Aussies still rating highly amongst both bookies and punters. Drawn in Group C in the 16-nation tournament, only South Korea appears to be a major threat to Australia, but Bahrain might fancy its chances of an upset. The tournament runs from January 7 - 29. Promotions Make a 5-fold combo bet on the Asian Cup with AllYouBet, and you will be guaranteed 10% back on any unsuccessful bets, to the tune of up to $100. Odds And now here are some of the odds from Betfair online sportsbook: Tournament winner: Japan 4.20, South Korea 5.80, Australia 6.80, Saudi Arabia 8.00, Iran 9.00, Qatar 13.50, all others 14.00 and over.
An Australian man drank 42 beers over a 17-hour period while playing poker at Sydney's Star City Casino on New Year's Eve, and the casino has defended itself by saying his drunk poker face was convincing. An Afternoon Drink The man began drinking at around 2:30 P.M. on December 31 and finished his binge at around 7:30 the following morning, by which time he had drunk almost a dozen beers from the casino's Bluff Bar and had another 31 served to him. The fallout has been severe, with Star City fined $10,000 by the Casino Liquor and Gaming Control Authority for breaking regulations about serving intoxicated customers, and three members of staff being disciplined by the casino. Beer Poker But despite owning up to serving the man, Star City has defended itself by saying that the man successfully concealed his emotions and drunkenness because he had on his best poker face. "The nature of poker is that players tend to be ...very controlled in their facial expressions and body movements," Star City wrote in a letter to the authority that was later leaked to the local press. "This level of control means that many of the visible signs that a person...is affected by alcohol may be minimized." The man, who was not named, might have to find a career in online poker until he is next allowed into Star City.
