British online bookmaker shuts down Aussie website, applies for Nevada gaming licenseץ

British online bookmaker William Hill this week shut down its Australian sports betting website, a move which was possibly made in order to protect its pending application for a Nevada gaming license.

William Hill Leaves Australia

London-based Hill said in an e-mail to customers this week that it has made the decision to withdraw its sports betting service for any customer registered in Australia. It did not give a reason for its decision, but asked that its Aussie customers request account withdrawals from the cashier through the My Account section of the website.

Hill's decision came as the Nevada Gaming Control Board prepares to begin a hearing this week on its acquisition of three local sportsbook operators. Observers have speculated that the decision to leave Australia may be linked to that hearing, as Hill was possibly in violation of certain local laws that carry fines of more than $1 million per day.
