ACMA Doles Out Betting Fines & How You Can Bet Safely

An investigation by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has led to Australia’s largest betting agency, Tabcorp Holdings, being fined AU$262,920 for accepting in-play sports bets online, which is a breach of the country’s Interactive Gambling Act 2001.  

The extensive investigation found that Tabcorp took 854 in-play bets on 69 tennis matches between April and October 2023, despite Australia’s ban on in-play betting. The ban aims to minimise gambling harm by limiting the frequency and accessibility of betting during live events. 

An ACMA member went on to say that in-play betting increases access to gambling opportunities and exacerbates the risks of gambling harm, as bettors can place bets with high frequency on multiple outcomes during live sporting events.  

There has been significant growth in online sports betting in Australia in recent years, and the ACMA deems it crucial that all online wagering services have systems in place so that illegal in-play bets are not accepted.  

Tabcorp’s Woes Continue

The company attributed the violation of the in-play betting ban to a technical issue within its betting system, stating that the issue first surfaced in April 2023 and was not resolved until October of that year.  

The ACMA responded that it was concerning that Tabcorp, a major wagering operator, took a full six months to identify and rectify the system error. Since then, Tabcorp has implemented new controls and reported additional risk-minimising measures to the ACMA to prevent any future breaches.  

The operator voided all affected bets, ensuring that customers were not financially impacted and that the company did not benefit financially from the incident. 

The in-play betting violations follow another serious breach of Tabcorp’s adherence to regulations. In August, the operator was fined a record $4.6 million after a Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VDCCC) investigation unearthed significant breaches of responsible gambling regulations. 

These occurred between August 2020 and February 2023, showing serious shortcomings in Tabcorp’s adherence to its betting licence and responsible gambling initiatives.  

To address these issues, Tabcorp has been directed to implement a transformation program focusing on harm minimisation, player safety protections and full compliance with its Responsible Gambling Code of Conduct.
