Punters Win in AFL Grand Final Draw

Draw was worst result for TAB; Collingwood to start as replay as favorite.
By | Sep 28, 2010

Some foresighted punters have made the drawn AFL grand final a bad day for Australian bookmakers, after a late run of bets on the unlikely result.

Scores were level at 68 apiece between Collingwood and St. Kilda when the final siren sounded at the MCG last Saturday, only the third time in VFL/AFL history that a draw has occurred in the league's biggest game.

According to TAB Sportsbet, punters backing the draw made around $1.2 million in wins as the odds on a draw firmed from $51 on the Monday before the match to just $26 by the time of the first bounce.

TAB Sportsbet held more than $8 million on the match following the draw, and paid out half of the value on any tickets placed on either side winning the match.

Premiership bets remain open as fans hold their breath for the replay this Saturday, which will certainly finish with a result after the AFL announced that this time there would be extra time in the case of a draw.

Collingwood once again goes into the match as favorite, although slightly less emphatically than it was going into the drawn game. The Magpies are hovering around the $1.55 mark with most bookmakers, while the Saints are a good value underdog at $2.35, considering the closeness of the two teams.
